Bikram Yoga Langley Students of the Month (June): Devron & Rebekah P.

Rebekah always imagined that yoga would become a part of her life – it was just a matter of time. I bought my first mat in 2005,” laughs Rebekah, “and let it sit in our closet for 8 years.” After her first Bikram Yoga Class, she told Devron, “You’ve got to try this, it’s right up your alley.” Devron knew that yoga was the best thing for his body, but worried that he would be in a room, with a bunch of flexible women who found it all so effortless. “Bikram is not like that,” Devron goes on to explain how he means this as a compliment to the Bikram practice, “even the most athletic person will struggle, because the struggle is against themselves.” They have since overcome their struggles with breathing, shyness and the infamous heat and find that their regular practice keeps them energized and focused for their busy lives. Bikram Yoga Maple Ridge Student of the Month (June): Robert L.

One of Robert's 3 children brought him to his first Bikram yoga class, which he describes succinctly as "Hell". Don't let this description throw you off - he might be joking. After all, this 55 year-old electrical contractor counts fishing and cracking jokes, in addition to hot yoga, among his favorite activities. Yoga 360, Surrey Student of the Month (June): Doug A.

Some people have a hard time believing that this 56 year-old married father of two and grandfather of four, floor-layer and life-long athlete does hot yoga: “A couple have people have said to me ‘I don’t picture you doing yoga.’” Doug is quick to dismiss stereotypes about yoga, “I tell them about the benefits I get from it. Doug started doing Bikram yoga when his daughter Christina started working that the Yoga 360 Surrey studio, but this had almost no influence on him starting yoga. “I would drive by to get my coffee and I thought, ‘that’s something I’d like to try.’ So, I gave it one try,” he continues, “then I tried one more class, then I bought a one year unlimited membership.” Doug has always worked hard and worked out, so the discipline, physical workout and heat are not new challenges for him: “I’ve worked out ever since I was a teenager, and I work in the heat to stretch the carpet, so that didn’t bother me at all.” (In fact, Doug is one of the few people that describe their first Bikram yoga class as “good”!) What is new is how great he’s feeling: “I’m getting a lot out of the class. Yoga 360 Student of the Month (May): Lani

Lani's Bikram yoga story is one of dramatic recovery and self-discovery. She began her Bikram yoga journey on January 14, 2014, to try to heal a crippling back injury she suffered in October 2013. "A slipped disc left me bedridden and unable to walk for 3 weeks. After that, the pain was constant." In Lani's mind, the treatment was almost as bad as the pain: "I hated taking the pain meds: oxycontin and Tylenol 3." As the mom of a two and a half year old daughter (in addition to her 21 year old daughter), Lani couldn't afford to be in pain or dependent on pain medications. Then she heard that Bikram yoga was healthy and healing. "My first class was pain and pleasure. Bikram Yoga Langley Student of the Month (May): Nathalie

Nathalie is passionate about Bikram yoga - it's done so much for her, and she wants to let everyone know. But, she still remembers the difficulties she had in her first class, and which, started long before she entered the classroom. "I stood up and looked right at myself in these great big wall to wall mirrors; I hated every moment if it. I hated the way I looked. I couldn't breathe. "I love being a mom. It's just the best. Being a grandma is even better - it's a chance to be an even better mom!" Linda has noticed that Bikram yoga has made it possible for her to be the kind of grandmother she wants to be: "I don't want to be the kind of grandmother who's in a rocking chair and can't enjoy their grandchildren. Bikram yoga helped me get on the floor with my grand kids and play; lots of women my age can't believe that I can get down on the floor."
