Dev, short for Sukhdev, spends his retirement pursuing his hobbies, like reading and cooking. He also likes to stay active - going to the gym and swimming. One day, his eldest daughter suggested that he take up yoga as a hobby.
Dev says he had never heard of Bikram yoga before that day, and, clearly, he didn't know what he was in for. He returned from his first class and described it to his family: "It was so hard! I was dying inside, and nobody knew!" Dev laughs at his description of death-by-yoga now! He knows that it's really a case of life-by-yoga.
Since starting Bikram yoga, Dev has noticed an improvement in his sciatica (pain that runs up and down the leg) and says he also feels stronger. "I feel like I have more energy; I stopped drinking coffee," he exclaims. He goes on to add that, "I also feel a sense of accomplishment when I go to yoga, which makes me feel happier."
Dev's dedicated yoga practice, 5 classes per week, has quite an effect on his 4 children as well: "My kids think it's amazing that I go to yoga. They are shocked that I go everyday." His kids worry that Dev might push himself too hard, so he appeases his children by limiting his Bikram yoga practice to a mere 5 per week. They can't limit his enthusiasm for the yoga, though: "I love the stretches and how much I sweat!"
When asked how he makes time for his demanding yoga practice, Dev's answer is simple, "I'm retired."
